Before it hits the editor’s desk, you’ll need feedback on your book from a reader’s point of view. Except—lucky you—I’m an avid reader who’s also professionally trained to evaluate your manuscript. As your beta reader, I’ll provide you detailed, qualified, ground floor feedback detailing the reader’s experience of your book so you can make it even better.

This edit zooms out and looks at the big picture of your book. You know: the story arc, character development, readability, plot, flow, your voice as a storyteller, and what’s missing from it all. A developmental edit is how we’ll take your book from “good” to “great.”

Like peanut butter and jelly, copy and line editing can be done separately, but they are so much better together. As your editor, I’ll break down your sandwich story line by line, examining sentence structure, word choices, pacing, logical sequences, style, formatting, and language choices.

Spell check ain’t got nothing on me. As your proofreader, I’ll be your last line of defense against all the typos, spelling errors, and grammar snafus that the word processing tools miss. This is the final polish before your book is ready for publishing.

My Editing Philosophy Is Simple
I am never cruel and I do my level best to make sure I am also never mean. I want my feedback to be helpful and worded in a way that it can be best received by you. I’ve worked with clients who need a soft touch and others who want feedback presented in the most direct way I can. Most clients fall in the middle.
This is something we can figure out before editing begins.
Whether it’s pointing out a perfect analogy or suggesting something isn’t clear, you can expect me to be honest about what’s working without flattery and clear about what’s not serving the reader, your voice, or the project’s goals.

How’s the pacing moving from one idea to the next. Can the reader connect with the author’s words with ease and without questions. How can I clear the smoke so the reader can focus on the fire. Maintaining your voice, tone, and worldview is incredibly important to me. I want to preserve how you sound and what you have to say and balance that task with what the reader needs from you to connect at the deepest level. A developmental edit is not a distillation of ideas but an enhancement. Like using a scalpel, not a kitchen knife. Your word choices, syntax, and grammar are handled at the next level of editing. I want to make sure the end project will meet its goals, connecting the right reader with the finished manuscript to change their life. Goals are met when the reader is at the center of the project, placed there by the author. When the reader can feel the author’s empathy for both how they read the manuscript and why. When the structure, ideas, content, flow, and pacing serve the reader’s wants and why. First, the hero (that’s you) seeks out help to slay her dragon. I’ll learn everything I need to know about your dragon … er, book … during a complimentary consultation and assess your best next steps.
Collaborate With Purpose
Whether we start with a sample edit, manuscript evaluation, or jump right into editing, I’ll be a collaborative partner whose only goal is to aid you on your quest. My favorite tools are Microsoft Word and Zoom calls—no swords or shields necessary.
A Happily Ever After
Like all good fairy tales, there’s a happy ending: I’ll deliver your edit in roughly four weeks (or longer, if your manuscript is more than 90,000 words), providing everything you need to crush your publishing goals and win your readers’ hearts. Dragon slayed.
